Lawrie leads rain delayed Open de Portugal

CASCAIS, Portugal, April 2 (UPI) -- Former British Open champ Paul Lawrie shot a 5-under 66 Saturday to take the lead during the suspended third round of the Estoril Open de Portugal.

Lawrie, who won the British Open in 1999, was 11-under 202 before play was called for darkness.

Steady rain fell all day Saturday and caused three weather-related delays.

The first suspension lasted 90 minutes because the greens were water-logged. The next came two hours later when more storms came through. The third delay much briefer but grounds crews needed time to fix greens.

The three suspensions totaled three hours. Six remaining players will return Sunday morning to finish their third rounds.

Barry Lane, one of those six golfers, is in second place at 10-under. Paul Broadhurst and Jose-Filipe Lima, the second-round co-leaders, are 1-under and tied for third 9-under. They are in the same group as Lane.
