Indians sign Eric Wedge through 2007

CLEVELAND, March 16 (UPI) -- Cleveland Indians Manager Eric Wedge has been given a contract extension through 2007.

Eric Wedge has consistently demonstrated his strengths as a leader for our team and organization," General Manager Mark Shapiro said Wednesday. "I am happy that we can secure his position as our on-field leader for the next three years."

Wedge, 37, guided the Indians to an 80-82 record last season, good for third place in the in the American League Central Division. It was a 12-game improvement over 2003 with the American League's youngest team.

Wedge has managed the Indians since Oct. 29, 2002. His seven-member coaching staff was also extended through 2007.
