
INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 15 (UPI) -- Reigning champion Roger Federer and two-time winner Lleyton Hewitt both advanced Tuesday in the third round at the $2.779 million Pacific Life Open.
So did Former women's champion Kim Clijsters.
The world No. 1 Federer defeated Luxembourg's Gilles Muller 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hour. He has won 12 straight matches, including a pair of titles, since losing to Russian Marat Safin in the Australian Open semifinals in January.
Hewitt, a former world No. 1, beat Michael Llodra" class="tpstyle">Frenchman Michael Llodra 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) Tuesday. The U.S. Open and Australian Open runner-up won this tournament in 2002 and 2003.
Clijsters defeated Russian Evgenia Linetskaya 6-2, 6-1 in 57 minutes to reach the quarterfinals.
Clijsters returned to the WTA tour following a lengthy layoff due to a left wrist injury. This is only her second tournament of 2005. She lost to fellow former world No. 1 Venus Williams in the quarterfinals in her native Belgium last month.
