Kansas City signs Sammy Knight

KANSAS CITY, Mo., March 11 (UPI) -- Veteran safety Sammy Knight Friday signed a five-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, team president Carl Peterson said.

"Sammy brings a great deal of experience to our defense," Peterson said on the Chiefs' Web site. "He's an eight-year veteran and has performed at a high level over that span. We went into free agency wanting to acquire a linebacker, safety and a corner. We have two of those positions right now."

On the free agent market, Kansas City, which had one of the NFL's worst defenses last season, also has signed former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Kendrell Bell this week.

The 6-0, 215-pound Knight has played in 126 games with 862 tackles, 5 sacks, 11 fumble recoveries and 10 forced fumbles, and has intercepted 35 passes for 594 yards with four returns for touchdowns.

He made the Pro Bowl in 2001 while playing for New Orleans.
