Scheckter wins pole for IndyCar opener

HOMESTEAD, Fla., March 5 (UPI) -- Tomas Scheckter won the pole for Sunday's Toyota Indy 300 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway, circling the 1.5-mile banked oval in 24.8518 seconds (215.115 m.p.h.).

Buddy Rice won last year's pole with a speed of 217.388 m.p.h.

The pole was the sixth of Scheckter's IndyCar career.

Starting on the front row with Scheckter will be Vitor Meira, who posted a time of 24.9443 seconds.

Tomas Enge (24.9636) and Rice (24.9806) will start on the second row.
