No players chosen by Hall Vets Committee

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y., March 2 (UPI) -- The Baseball Hall of Fame announced Wednesday that no candidates were elected to the hall by the Veterans Committee for the second straight year.

Gil Hodges and Ron Santo each had 52 votes, eight short of the number required for induction.

Twenty-five men were eligible.

Others, and their vote totals, included Tony Oliva (45), Jim Kaat (43), Joe Torre (36), Maury Wills (26) and Vada Pinson (23).

"Election to the Hall of Fame has always been difficult, as evidenced by only 1 percent of those privileged to play baseball in the major leagues are enshrined in Cooperstown," said Hall of Fame Chairman Jane Forbes Clark.
