Patriots release receiver Troy Brown

FOXBORO, Mass., March 1 (UPI) -- The New England Patriots decided Tuesday not to renew the contract of wide receiver Troy Brown.

His release was salary cap related. Brown was due a $2.5 million roster bonus this week if he remained on the roster.

Brown, 33, was the Super Bowl champions' most versatile player last season, when he also played cornerback and returned punts.

On defense, he had three interceptions and 17 tackles.

Brown, who was an eighth-round draft pick out of Marshall in 1993, is the third player to be released by the Patriots this off-season, joining cornerback Ty Law and linebacker Roman Phifer.
