Chaney won't coach in Atlantic 10 tourney

Feb. 28, 2005 at 7:30 PM   |   Comments

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Temple University coach John Chaney announced Monday he will not coach in the Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament.

Chaney has been under fire since game last Tuesday against conference foe Saint Joseph's in which he admitted sending in "the goons" in response to what he believed were illegal Hawks screens that were not being called by the officials.

Saint Joseph's senior John Bryant suffered a broken arm as a result of a hard foul by Temple's seldom-used Nehemiah Ingram, who fouled out of the game in just four minutes. Afterwards, Chaney said he was "sending a message."

"Last week, my words and actions were wrong, wrong, wrong," Chaney said. "I never intended, nor did any of my players intend, for anyone to be injured.

"I have taken full responsibility for my words and actions, and have apologized from my heart."

Bryant is expected to miss the rest of the season including the Atlantic Coast tournament.
