Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Linebacker Julian Peterson was designated Tuesday by the San Francisco 49ers as their franchise player for the second straight year.
Peterson's salary will be the average of the top five players at his position in the 2005 season.
Peterson can still negotiate with other teams. If he receives an offer from another team, the 49ers can either match that offer, or receive two first- round draft choices as compensation.
Peterson missed most of last season with a torn left Achilles' tendon. He had 27 tackles and two sacks. In five seasons he has 234 tackles, 18 1/2 sacks and five interceptions.
