SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Long-time NBA star Karl Malone announced his retirement Sunday.

"It has been a great 19-year ride, but all good things must come to an end," said Malone.

Malone ends his career second on the NBA's all-time scoring list with 36,928 points, behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's 38,387.

A 14-time All-Star and twice the league's MVP, Malone averaged 25 points and 10.1 rebounds over 1,476 games.

Malone and Jerry West are the only players to average at least 25 points in 11 consecutive seasons and he is the only player in league history to be named to the All-NBA team 11 times (1989-99).

Last season Malone had career-lows of 13.2 points and 8.7 rebounds with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Malone, 41, had knee surgery in the summer of 2003. That limited him to just 42 games during his one season in Los Angeles.
