NHL, players union end talks

TORONTO, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- The NHL and its players union broke off talks Thursday with no progress reported and no further meetings scheduled.

After the two sides met in Toronto on the 148th day of the NHL lockout, Bill Daly, the league's chief legal officer, said:

"The union brought nothing new to the table, and they simply covered ground we had covered numerous times before. No new meetings are scheduled and, as far as we are concerned, none are expected."

Daly said if there are no further developjments "the league will make a formal announcement on the status of the season in the near future."

The NHL season is already two-thirds gone.

The lockout started in September after the players' old collective bargaining agreement expired.

More than 375 NHL players have signed on with teams in Europe pending a resolution of the dispute.
