DETROIT, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- The Detroit Tigers acquired hard-throwing reliever Kyle Farnsworth from the Chicago Cubs Wednesday in exchange for three minor league players.

Farnsworth, 28, was 4-5 last season with a 4.73 ERA in 72 appearances.

The deal gives the Cubs pitcher Roberto Novoa, infielder Scott Moore and outfielder Clarence "Bo" Flowers. Of the three, only Novoa has major league experience.

Detroit will also get a player to be named.

The right-handed Farnsworth "can pitch in many roles out of our bullpen and is a quality addition to our pitching staff," Detroit General Manager Dave Dombrowski said.

Farnsworth, whose fastball is frequently clocked around 100 mph, made at least 70 appearances in three of the last four seasons.

UConn plays No. 2 North Carolina Sunday at the Hartford Civic Center.

Leaving the Big Apple to get a big plum

NEW YORK, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- The New York youth whose handlers lied about his age so he could compete in, and eventually help win, the 2001 Little League World Series is leaving the city.

Danny Almonte was exposed as a 14-year-old instead of a 12-year-old after he led his team to the championship, the New York Daily News said Wednesday.

But Tuesday his father came from the Dominican Republic to move the now-17-year-old junior to a Florida high school where he can maximize his opportunities for breaking into the big leagues.

Danny has been a star pitcher for Monroe High School's team, leading them to a city championship last year at Shea Stadium.

The flame-throwing lefty will join a team at Hialeah American Senior High School that includes several former teammates from the disgraced 2001 Rolando Paulino All-Stars.

One of the team's coaches is Alberto Gonzalez, who managed the 2001 All-Stars but was banned from Little League after Danny was found to be a ringer. Danny will live with Gonzalez.

"We were pushing him in class and teaching him a lot about life," said Monroe coach Mike Turo. "We got him away from all that Little League stuff, and I feel this is going to bring him back to that."

Norm Chow joins Titans' staff

NASHVILLE, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Norm Chow was hired Wednesday as the offensive coordinator of the Tennesee Titans.

The 58-year-old Chow has held a similar post with two-time national champion Southern California since 2001. The Titans' job is his first in the NFL in 32 years of coaching.

Chow has guided a number of top quarterbacks at the college level, including Ty Detmer and Steve Young at Brigham Young, Phillip Rivers at N.C. State and Heisman Trophy winners Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC.

"I am certain that his philosophy is consistent with ours and his experience will allow us the opportunity to improve," Tennessee Coach Jeff Fisher said.

Chow replaces Mike Heimerdinger, who took the same job with the New York Jets last month.
