New Zealand course damaged before Open

Feb. 8, 2005 at 5:12 PM   |   Comments

WHANGAPARAOA, New Zealand, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Vandals damaged four greens of the Gulf Harbor Country Club course where the New Zealand Open begins Thursday.

"It's very disappointing, but our greens staff have repaired the damage and it won't have any effect on the tournament," Gulf Harbour spokesman Peter Wall said Tuesday.

One green was written on and holes were dug in three others. Police were investigating.

The tournament is on the European Tour's international schedule for the first time.

Entrants include Craig Parry and Nick Dougherty, the winners of the last two tour events; Michael Campbell, Barry Lane, Paul Lawrie and Pierre Fulke.
