Dave Duerson faces battery charges

SOUTH BEND, Ind., Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Former football star Dave Duerson resigned as a Notre Dame trustee after being charged with battery and domestic battery, it was reported Tuesday.

A police report said Duerson, who played for Notre Dame and three NFL teams, allegedly struck his wife, then pushed her out of their hotel room on the Notre Dame campus last week. The misdemeanor charges were filed Monday by St. Joseph County (Ind.) Prosecutor Mike Dvorak.

Police said Duerson's wife was taken to a local hospital and later released.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the chairman of the Board of Trustees said Duerson "has voluntarily resigned" from the board.

The incident that led to the charges against the former defensive back was a "family misunderstanding, which occurred in private and it has already been resolved in private," a family spokesman told the newspaper.

Duerson, 43, was an all-America player at Notre Dame and then played 11 seasons in the NFL with Chicago the New York Giants and Phoenix. He earned all-pro honors four times.

Duerson heads Duerson Foods, a company that sells sausage to fast-food restaurants.
