DETROIT, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Four-time all-star Magglio Ordonez has a five-year contract for a reported $75 million with the Detroit Tigers -- a deal that could be voided by injury.
The Tigers announced the contract and introduced the former Chicago White Sox star at a news conference Monday.
"I'm looking for Magglio to be our cleanup hitter," Manager Alan Trammell said.
The Tigers could void the contract under an injury clause if the right-fielder goes on the disabled list for 25 days or more with left knee problems. Ordonez, 31, had two operations on the knee in 2004.
Ordonez, a career .307 hitter, played eight years for the White Sox. He was in just 52 games last season.
The Tigers finished in fourth place in the American League Central last season, 20 games behind the champion Minnesota Twins.
"I know this division is wide open," Ordonez said. "I believe we have the best team in the division. We have good pitching, a good lineup. The only thing we have to do is play together. I know we can win this division."
