NHL talks: 'No progress was made'

NEW YORK, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- The latest talks between the NHL and its locked-out players ended Friday but "no progress was made," the leader of the players union said.

The two sides met in New York for about four hours on the 142nd day of the lockout.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettmann and Bob Goodenow, executive director of the players union, participated in the latest talks.

Afterward, Goodenow said: "We met the last couple of days to see if there was any common ground. The parties agreed to stay in touch, but no progress was made."

Bill Daly, the league's chief legal officer, said: "We had extensive and constructive talks over the past two days. While there are no future meetings scheduled, we have agreed to keep the lines of communication open."

No NHL games have been played in the 2004-05 season and the annual all-star game has been canceled.
