Davenport reaches Tokyo quarterfinals

TOKYO, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Lindsay Davenport, coming off her disappointing loss in the Australian Open final, reached the quarterfinals Thursday at the Pan Pacific Open.

Davenport lost to Serena Williams in three sets in Melbourne last weekend.

The two-time defending champion of this event advanced Thursday with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Saori Obata.

Also moving into the quarterfinals was fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva, who defeated Akiko Morigami, 6-2, 6-2.

Davenport, ranked No. 1 in the world, will next meet Iveta Benesova.

Benesova defeated Aiko Nakamura, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
