SINGAPORE, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Defending champion Colin Montgomerie of Scotland held a three-shot lead Thursday after the opening round of the Caltex Masters in Singapore.

The 41-year-old Montgomerie shot a 7-under-par 65 in a round that included birdies on three par-3 holes.

"I have always said that if I am playing well my iron shots are good and making 2's is always a sign of me swinging the club well," Montgomerie said.

Mark Foster, Nick Dougherty and Danny Chia were tied for second at 68. Seven other players were another shot back.
