KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Former Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch signed Tuesday as a free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 6-1, 200-pounder, who has failed in two previous tries to make an NFL team, earned the Heisman in 2001 while a quarterback at Nebraska, where he is the school's all-time total offense leader.

In both previous pro attempts, he was signed as a defensive back, as he has been this time.

Crouch was taken in the third round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams and had a tryout with Green Bay last year as both a defensive back and wide receiver.

He likely will play safety this summer when he joins the Chiefs' entry in NFL Europe.
