Davenport reaches third round

MELBOURNE, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Lindsay Davenport dropped the opening set Thursday, but came back to advance into the third round of the Australian Open.

Davenport ousted Michaela Pastikova of the Czech Republic, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, in a match that went 102 minutes.

Third-seeded Anastaia Myskina of Russia also moved on by defeating Tzipora Obziler of Israel, 6-4, 6-2.

Myskina will meet American Lisa Raymond in the third round.

On Wednesday, German Tommy Haas blew a two-set lead and fell to Slovakian Karol Beck in the second round.

Winners on the women's side Wednesday included second-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France, No. 4 Maria Sharapova of Russia and the 2003 champion, No. 7 Serena Williams of the United States.

Beck beat Haas 5-7, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in a 3 1/2-hour match played in temperatures above 100 degrees.

Haas fought off cramps throughout the final set.

Other winners included included Argentine Gaston Gaudio, the 2004 French Open champion, and Spaniard Tommy Robredo.

Among losers in the women's draw were seeded players Vera Zvonareva of Russia and Sninobu Asagoe of Japan.
