LOS ANGELES, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- USC hired Tim Floyd as its new basketball coach Friday, but he will serve only as an assistant for the remainder of the current season.
Floyd will not handle on-court activities, instead spending his time on the recruiting trail.
School officials said Jim Saia, who became interim coach when Henry Bibby was fired Dec. 6, will stay on to lead the team this season.
"I'm very appreciative of this opportunity. This is a great time to be at USC," said Floyd. "There's a lot of excitement going on at the school, both academically and athletically. I see a great commitment toward making the men's basketball program as good as it can be and that's clearly evident with the new facility that is being built."
Floyd has coached at Iowa State and in the NBA with Chicago and New Orleans. He was fired by the New Orleans Hornets last May.
