STORRS, Conn., Jan. 14 (UPI) -- The University of Connecticut announced Friday that Coach Jim Calhoun had agreed to a new six-year contract that carries through 2010.
"I am very happy that the university is allowing me the opportunity to do what I hope to do, and that is end my career here at UConn, whenever that time may be," Calhoun said.
"It especially pleases me to know that the university has now put me financially in the same class as the other outstanding men's basketball coaches in America. And, importantly, this commitment allows me and my staff to continue our pursuit of another championship with a renewed show of support."
Connecticut won national titles under Calhoun in 1999 and 2004. The Huskies defeated Georgia Tech in last season's title game.
Calhoun's overall record is 689-305 in 33 seasons at Northeastern and Connecticut.
Geno Auriemma, the coach of the women's team at Connecticut, also received a five-year contract extension.
