Abdur-Rahim out after elbow surgery

PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Portland forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim will be out indefinitely after undergoing elbow surgery, it was reported Thursday.

The procedure was needed to remove bone fragments from an old injury, likely from high school, The Oregonian said.

The operation was performed Wednesday in Los Angeles. The player's recovery is expected to take at least five weeks, the newspaper said.

The 6-9 Abdur-Rahim, 28, has averaged 15.7 points and eight rebounds in 23 games this season.

The eight-year veteran, who was acquired in a trade with Atlanta, was a first-round draft pick by the Vancouver Grizzlies in 1996.
