DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Jeff Gordon had the fastest time Tuesday around the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway in a Dodge Charger.
Gordon posted a time of 48.531 seconds (185.448 m.p.h.) in the afternoon session.
Four teams and a total of 10 drivers will sit behind the wheel of a Charger at this year's Daytona 500.
Reigning Nextel Cup champion Kurt Busch (Ford) was also among the 26 teams in Florida for the first of two three-day sessions at the Speedway.
Busch finished the morning session with the fifth-fastest time - 48.802 seconds, 184.419 m.p.h.
Randy LaJoie (48.588), Boris Said (48.601), Elliott Sadler (48.753) and Jeremy Mayfield (48.779) completed the top-five.
Along with Busch, Gordon, Sadler and Mayfield, the other top-10 drivers in this week's session are: 2004 Daytona 500 winner Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Ryan Newman.
The three-day test continues through Thursday.
