U.S. ski team loses downhiller Friedman

PARK CITY, Utah, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- U.S. downhill skier Bryon Friedman is out for the season after breaking his right leg and left hand in a crash during a training run at Chamonix, France.

A United States Ski Team statement Thursday said Friedman was injured while practicing for World Cup races. The skier underwent surgery Wednesday following the accident.

Friedman's lower leg was stabilized with a rod after the operation to fix the leg fracture. He also broke two bones in his hand.

The 24-year-old Friedman was in his second full year of World Cup racing and had placed seventh in a downhill race in Colorado last month.
