Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24

ALLEN PARK, Mich., Jan. 6 (UPI) -- A memorial service is scheduled in Dallas Friday for Robert L. "Texas Bob" Smith, a former Detroit Lions fullback who died at the age of 74.
The team reported on its Web site that Smith died Wednesday in Dallas after a brief illness.
Smith, who had been all-America player at Texas A&M, joined the Lions in 1953 after serving as a lieutenant in the Korean War.
The Detroit team beat the Cleveland Browns for the NFL championship that season.
Smith, called "Texas Bob" by his teammates, played for the Lions again in 1954, when the team won the Western Conference title.
Survivors include Smith's wife of 53 years, Betty Lu, and sons Rick and Bart Smith, both of Houston.
