BOSTON, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Paul Pierce scored 26 points Friday and Boston halted a three-game losing streak with a 108-103 victory over Washington.

The Celtics avoided what would have been their second four-game skid of the season.

Gary Payton added 18 points while Boston took advantage of a huge disparity at the free-throw line.

The Celtics made 28 of 34 foul shots while Washington went to the line just 10 times, making nine.

Washington has dropped four of six and has fallen to just two games above the .500 mark.

Larry Hughes paced the Wizards with 33 points.
