Phelps receives probated sentence

SALISBURY, Md., Dec. 29 (UPI) -- American Olympic swimming star Michael Phelps pleaded guilty to a drunken driving charge Wednesday and received an 18-month probated sentence.

Phelps, 19, will have the incident stricken from his record if he does not violate terms of his probation.

He was also fined $250 and ordered to attend meetings of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Other charges against Phelps were dropped.

"I recognize the seriousness of this mistake," Phelps said in the courtroom. "I've learned from this mistake and will continue learning from this mistake for the rest of my life."

Phelps won eight medals during the Athens Olympics, six of them gold.
