SHREVEPORT, La., Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Freshman quarterback Bret Meyer passed and ran for 234 yards and Stevie Hicks ran for 160 Tuesday as Iowa State beat Miami-Ohio, 17-13, in the Independence Bowl.

Iowa State (7-5) had a 4-4 record in the Big 12 but captured a share of the conference's North Division title. It was the school's second-ever bowl victory.

Josh Betts passed for 239 yards with a touchdown for the RedHawks (8-5), who learned just moments before taking the field that offensive coordinator Shane Montgomery was promoted to head coach.

Terry Hoeppner, who coached his last game with Miami, takes over at Indiana, which fired Gerry DiNardo on Dec. 1.

Iowa State, trailing 13-10, launched an eight-play, 71-yard drive that was capped by a one-yard touchdown by Ryan Kock for the final 17-13 margin with 13:02 remaining.
