HUNTERSVILLE, N.C., Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Former National Football League star Reggie White died Sunday in North Carolina at the age of 43.
White, who was an ordained minister and known in the league as the "Minister of Defense," died at his home. The cause of death was not immediately known.
"Today our beloved husband, father and friend passed away," said a statement from White's wife, Sara. "His family appreciates your thoughts and prayers as we mourn the loss of Reggie White. We want to thank you in advance for honoring our privacy."
NFL Commissioner said White was one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history.
White played eight years for the Philadelphia Eagles, six with the Green Bay Packers and one with the Carolina Panthers.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of the greatest men ever to play the game of football," said a statement from the Eagles.
White, a 13-time Pro Bowl star, had 198 sacks in his 15-year career.
