BOSTON, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox re-signed catcher Jason Varitek Friday to a deal reportedly worth $40 million over four years.
Varitek had been the target of several other clubs in free agency.
The eight-year veteran had his best offensive season in 2004, batting .296 with 18 homers and 73 RBI.
Upon signing, Varitek, 32, immediately was named captain, joining Jim Rice and Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski as the only captains the Red Sox have had since 1966.
"I'm extremely honored right now," Varitek said. "I can't change. I lead by my position, by what I do, by what I believe in."
"We could not be happier," said General Manager Theo Epstein. "It's not every day that you're lucky enough to find a player who embodies everything you want a franchise to be."
In his career, Varitek has batted .271 with 97 home runs and 418 RBI.
