SAN DIEGO, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- The San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox pulled off a four-player trade on Monday.
San Diego got outfielder Dave Roberts in exchange for outfielder Jay Payton, infielder Ramon Vazquez, minor league right-handed pitcher David Pauley and cash.
It was Roberts' base running that helped the Red Sox in their comeback against the New York Yankees in the 2004 American League Championship Series.
The Red Sox acquired Roberts from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the middle of last season and then in Game 4 of the ALCS, he stole a base and scored the tying run off Mariano Rivera in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Roberts, 32, appeared in a combined 113 games with the Dodgers and Red Sox in 2004, batting .254 with seven triples, 14 doubles, 35 RBI and 38 stolen bases in 41 attempts. He led both clubs to a 26-3 mark when he recorded a stolen base.
