SEATTLE, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- The Seattle Mariners made it official Friday by announcing the signing of third baseman Adrian Beltre to a five-year contract.

The deal had been widely reported Thursday. One report said Beltre will earn $64 million over the next five seasons.

Beltre led the majors in home runs last season, hitting 48 for Los Angeles. Seattle also spent $50 million this week to obtain first baseman Richie Sexson for four years.

Beltre batted .334 with the Dodgers in 2004 with 121 RBI.

"Adrian is one of the best young position players in baseball," said Mariners General Manager Bill Bavasi. "He plays Gold Glove caliber defense and is an offensive force."

"We are also pleased that, like Richie Sexson, Adrian is a great person as well as a great player. He will be a terrific addition to our community."
