AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Auckland's 75-year-old speedway racing at Western Springs has been halted in a noise dispute and some fear a permanent pit stop.
Following a meeting with residents, speedway officials and city council members, racing has been suspended indefinitely until a court order limiting noise levels is lifted. This would require a new ruling from the Environment Court.
Mediation talks Friday involving the interested parties brought no movement toward raising the 85 decibel limit set by a court order.
Despite the situation, the deputy mayor is still positive that speedway will continue to attract capacity crowds over summer.
"They're on hold now, but it's because of the court order that is there and we have brokered a commitment to explore these issues further and come to a conclusion on Monday," Bruce Hucker said.
Organizers believe keeping noise levels to the 85 decibel limit ordered by the Environment Court is unrealistic.
