Vijay Singh named top player in Europe

LONDON, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Vijay Singh, named player of the year on the U.S. tour last week, earned the same honor in Europe Wednesday.

The award was a controversial one since Singh is not a full-time member of the European Tour. Nevertheless, he was voted No. 1 by the Association of Golf Writers, Television and Radio.

Singh won nine times on the PGA Tour this year, but did not have a victory in Europe. His PGA Championship, however, counts as a European Tour win since all four major tournaments and all World Golf Championship events are part of the European circuit.
