BOSTON, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- Free agent shortstop Edgar Renteria Wednesday signed with the Boston Red Sox.
He reportedly will receive $40 million over four years. Renteria told reporters his former team, the St. Louis Cardinals, who were swept by Boston in the World Series, was among his suitors, and that money was part of the reason he decided to play for the world champions.
"The biggest reason was that Boston is a traditional team," Renteria said. "I played with (the Cardinals) for six years but finally we didn't come to an accord."
The 29-year-old four-time All-Star is a two-time Gold Glove winner. He batted .287 last season with 10 home runs and 72 RBI.
The nine-year pro has a career .289 batting average with 83 homers and 565 runs batted in.
