Red Sox sign David Wells

BOSTON, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox Tuesday signed free agent 41-year-old left-hander David Wells to a two-year contract.

Boston is the veteran's seventh major league team. He was 12-8 for San Diego last season and also pitched for Toronto, the New York Yankees, Baltimore, the Chicago White Sox and Cincinnati.

"David Wells has proven to be one of the top left-handers in the game," General Manager Theo Epstein said. "He throws strikes and should give us quality innings, improving the depth of our starting rotation."

Wells has a record of 212-136 with an ERA of 4.03 in his career. He has a 10-3 mark in post-season appearances.
