Soccer club punished for 'racist abuse'

NYON, Switzerland, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- An Italian soccer team will play its next home match in an empty stadium as punishment for "racist abuse and crowd disturbances" by its fans.

The fan ban was imposed Friday by the UEFA, European soccer's governing body, against the SS Lazio club of Rome,

The next time Lazio plays a home match, its fans will not be in the stadium.

A report from the UEFA said the ban resulted from incidents during a 2-2 draw against FK Partizan in Rome Nov. 25.

The UEFA cited "racist abuse and crowd disburbances, including missile-throwing and flares being set off, clashes with police and a stabbing incident."

It was the third time the Lazio club has been punished for race-related behavior by its fans, the UEFA said.
