GAINESVILLE, Fla., Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Urban Meyer is now football coach at the University of Florida, succeeding Ron Zook, who was fired during the season.

The university announced Meyer's hiring Saturday.

"Urban Meyer represents the qualities that we were looking for in our head coach," Athletic Director Jeremy Foley said.

"He is an innovator of the game with proven success as a head coach."

Meyer coached the Utah Utes to an 11-0 record this season.

"I am certainly excited about the opportunity to be the head coach at the University of Florida," Meyer said.

Florida finished the season with a 7-4 record. The Gators were 4-4 in the Southeastern Conference.
