NHL negotiations set to resume

NEW YORK, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- Negotiators for the NHL and its locked-out players plan to meet next week for the first time in three months.

Bob Goodenow, the union's executive director, asked the league Thursday to resume talks in Toronto. The NHL agreed to meet Dec. 9.

Goodenow said the union is working on a new proposal for a collective bargaining agreement.

A lockout of players started in mid-September upon expiration of the old agreement. Negotiators have not met since Sept. 9. More than 330 games have already been canceled.

"Almost three months have passed since the players made their last proposal and we have yet to receive a counter-offer from the league," Goodenow said. "We have been working hard at other creative solutions and believe our new proposal will provide a basis to end the owners' lockout and resume NHL hockey."

"We look forward to meeting with the NHL Players' Association next week," said Bill Daly, NHL executive vice president.

The NHL says its teams have had huge financial losses. The league wants a salary cap. The players' have refused a cap and want a luxury tax instead.
