Bears sign quarterback Jeff George, 36

"I'm just so thankful," said George, who turns 37 next month.

The 13-year veteran practiced with the Bears for the first time after signing a one-year contract in the morning.

"I was in downtown Indianapolis for the lightning of the Christmas tree and came home Saturday night and got the call from the Bears, and boy, it was the best news I got in a long time," George said.

George will be a backup for the Bears behind Chad Hutchinson, who will start Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

"If they ask me to play, great. I'll be ready. I'll be prepared," George said.

George was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1990 draft and played for Indianapolis, Atlanta, Minnesota and Washington. He was with Seattle for part of the 2002 season but did not play in a game.
