Spanish soccer apologizes for racist fans

MADRID, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- The Spanish Football Association has apologized for fans in Madrid who greeted two soccer players with fascist salutes.

The SFA also vowed to crack down on so-called "yobs" in the second racist incident at Bernabeu Stadium in a week.

The crowd in the latest incident taunted black players with monkey noises. The abuse was aimed at Ashley Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips during a Champions League match between Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen.

International soccer's ruling body is facing mounting pressure to take action against Spain, which could range from requiring anti-racism efforts to requiring games to be played behind closed doors.
