Bonds wins seventh MVP award

NEW YORK, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds won his seventh National League Most Valuable Player Award Monday.

The 40-year-old Bonds won for the fourth straight year.

No other player has won the MVP award seven times.

Bonds got 24 of 32 first-place votes and a total of 407 points in voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Adrian Beltre of the Los Angeles Dodgers was second with 311.

Bonds is the oldest player to win the honor.

He led the league this season with a .362 batting average, hit 45 home runs and drove in 101 runs. Opposing pitchers walked him a record 232 times.

Bonds also won the MVP award as a Pittsburgh Pirate in 1990 and 1992. He has won five times with the Giants.

The American League MVP winner will be announced Tuesday.
