NEW YORK, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees announced Wednesday that Mel Stottlemyre would return as the team's pitching coach next season.

There had been reports that Stottlemyre was considering retirement.

In addition, the Yankees said Don Mattingly would return as hitting instructor and that Joe Girardi would become bench coach, replacing newly-named New York Mets Manager Willie Randolph.

Next season will be Stottlemyre's 10th as the Yankees' pitching coach.
