Lombardi finalists named

HOUSTON, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Four players were named finalists Tuesday for the Lombardi Award as the top defensive player in college football.

One is Georgia defensive end David Pollack, also a finalist in 2003. He is the 15th player to be considered twice in his career.

Through nine games this season, Pollack has 7½ sacks, one short of all-time Southeastern Conference sacks leader Reggie White of Tennessee.

Fellow defensive ends Shaun Coy of top-ranked Southern California and Erasmus James of Wisconsin also are on the list, as is Texas linebacker Derrick Johnson.

The choices mark the first time since 1990 that each potential winner is a senior. The four were chosen from a group of 12 semifinalists.

The winner will be named at a Houston Rotary Club dinner Dec. 8.
