Newman wins another NASCAR pole

HAMPTON, Ga., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Ryan Newman won his eighth pole of the NASCAR season Friday, leading the qualifying for Sunday's Bass Pro Shops MBNA 500.

Newman covered the 1.54-mile Atlanta Motor Speedway track in 28.939 seconds for a speed of 191.575 miles per hour.

He has won the pole for the last four races held at the Atlanta track.

Joe Nemechek qualified second in 28.978 seconds and was followed by Elliott Sadler and Carl Edwards.

Nextel Cup Series points leader Kurt Busch qualified 22nd.

Jeff Gordon, who will begin the race 96 points behind Busch, will start in the 10th position.

There are four races remaining in the NASCAR campaign.
