MADRID, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Andre Agassi, playing for the first time since losing to Roger Federer at the U.S. Open last month, beat Max Mirnyi Tuesday at the $3.035 million Masters Series Madrid.
Agassi won 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 fashion. An eight-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1, the 34-year-old American captured this Madrid event in 2002.
Agassi had been idle competively since losing to the world No. 1 Federer in five sets in the U.S. Open quarterfinals six weeks ago.
American Mardy Fish, the Olympic silver medalist, lost to Romanian Andrei Pavel 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2).
Argentine David Nalbandian moved into the third round with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 decision against Swede Robin Soderling, who captured his first-ever ATP title in Lyon just two weeks ago.
This week's indoor-hardcourt champ will earn $557,000.
