ACC announces changes

GREENSBORO, N.C., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- The Atlantic Coast Conference Tuesday unveiled its new divisional alignments and new logo.

The changes were made in conjunction with the additions of four new members earlier this year, which made the ACC a 12-member league.

Commissioner John Swofford said the changes will take effect July 1, 2005.

"The seal and divisional names adopted by our schools really embrace the geography of the ACC while maintaining its heritage," he said. "The new look of our seal projects the fact that our conference truly encompasses the 'Atlantic Coast'."

The league added Miami and Virginia Tech this year, and Boston College will join next season.

The Atlantic will be comprised of Maryland, Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina State and Wake Forest, while the Coastal will include Virginia, Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina and Virginia Tech.

Each team will play the other teams in its division every year, and also face a "permanent partner" from the opposite division annually. The permanent partners will be Maryland-Virginia, Virginia Tech-Boston College, Georgia Tech-Clemson, Miami-Florida State, and North Carolina-N.C. State.
