MLB: N.Y. Yankees 19, Boston 8

BOSTON, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees battered Boston pitchers for 22 hits and beat the Red Sox 19-8 Saturday to take a 3-0 lead in the American League Championship Series.

The Red Sox had 15 hits of their own. The combined 37 set a post-season record.

Hedeki Matsui had five hits, including two home runs, drove in five runs and scored five for the Yankees.

Gary Sheffield slammed a three-run homer and Alex Rodriguez a solo shot for New York.

Trot Nixon and Jason Varitek his two-run homers for Boston.

The Yankees are a game away from their second straight World Series.

"We feel like we have a whole lot of momentum," Rodriguez said. "It doesn't matter who we're facing."
