NFL to donate money in Tilman's honor

NEW YORK, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- The National Football League Thursday announced it would donate $250,000 to the USO in memory of former Arizona Cardinals player and Army Ranger Pat Tillman.

The money will be used to construct a USO facility in Afghanistan, which tentatively has been named the "Pat Tillman USO Center."

He played four seasons with the Cardinals and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2002. He was killed in combat April 22.

The idea was conceived by Commissioner Paul Tagliabue while he visited U.S. bases in Germany last spring. Afterwards, he initiated discussions with the USO.

"We have been associated with the USO since our first players tour to Vietnam in 1966 and are proud to extend our support in memory of Pat Tillman in this tangible way," he said. "Pat personified the best values of America and the National Football League. He was an extraordinary team player -- whether it was with the Arizona Cardinals or Army Rangers. This is part of Pat's tremendous legacy to his extended military family."
